One dead in two-car collision north of Whangarei

A two-car collision in Northland has left one person dead and five injured.

Of those injured in the crash on State Highway 1 between Whangarei and Hikurangi this afternoon one is critical, two are seriously injured and the other two suffered moderate injuries.

The road at Hikurangi is expected to remain closed for several hours.

Two people also remain in critical conditions after separate road incidents elsewhere today.

A pedestrian has life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car in central Auckland early this morning.

Police say emergency services were called to Victoria St West at about 2am.

The person was taken to hospital by ambulance with critical injuries.

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.

Meanwhile, a man has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Waikato.

State Highway 25 was closed at Hikuai, about 40km north of Waihi.

The police say the incident happened around 6.50am just south of the Tairua River.

Diversions were set up at State Highway 25A south of the scene.

Early two vehicles have collided in a serious crash on State Highway 6 near Queenstown.

The police were alerted to the crash just before 1pm. They said two people were injured.

The road was blocked at Gibbston and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

Crown Range Road, between Queenstown and Wanaka, is completely blocked following a two-vehicle crash.

The crash occurred about 2:40pm and one person is currently trapped in a vehicle.
