Crash in Whanganui leaves one dead

One person has died in a crash on State Highway 3 in the Whanganui District.

Unexplained death in Taita, Lower Hutt early on Sunday 26th January 2020.  A Police cordon and crime scene invetsigation tent were in place Monday 27th January 2020.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash between a car and a motorcycle at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Watt Livingstone Road in Westmare, at 12.30pm.

Later this afternoon another serious crash involving a motorcycle happened, this time on Middle Road, Poukawa. The crash occurred at about 1.55pm.

The motorcyclist was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending, and the road is likely to be closed for some time.

Diversions are in place on Mutiny Road and Te Aute Trust Road.

Motorists are advised to take alternative routes.

Meanwhile, State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge has just one lane open after an incident where a cyclist was injured.

A section of State Highway 2 between Carterton and Greytown has re-opened following the incident.

Initial reports show the cyclist is in a serious condition.

Emergency services are working to have the road fully reopened as soon as possible.

But motorists should expect delays.
