The fifth annual multi-ethnic dance festival was in full swing at Victory Convention Centre in Auckland today.

The free event is hosted by the Nepalese Cultural Centre New Zealand.

The president of the centre and the organiser, Kamal Prasad Shrestha, said there were more than 250 performers who came from various ethnic backgrounds.

There will also be many food stalls in the venue selling a variety of cuisine.

Labour MP Michael Wood said this was an important event for the ethnic communities.

He said the small Nepalese community had played a very important role in terms of connecting a whole variety of different communities to share culture.

"It's [festival] built up a really quite strong following across the range of different ethnic communities in Auckland and is a really important platform for people to share their culture, get to know one another and come to greater understanding between different groups in our community," he said.

Wood said he was a regular at the cultural event and he was looking forward to this fun and colourful event.
