Police have apologised for allowing a child who was part of a Family Court case to fly out of the country.

On 7 February last year, a police officer at Christchurch Airport let the mother travel internationally with her child, despite a court order and alert that told authorities not to do so.

The father then took the case to the High Court.

It has been settled today, after an agreement between the two parties.

Police said they unreservedly apologise for the error, and for the stress it caused to the plaintiffs.

They said they had made improvements to prevent a repeat, after a full investigation into why the child was allowed to leave the country.
