Former Tauranga mayor Stuart Crosby has been elected president of Local Government New Zealand.

LGNZ, the body which represents 78 councils, today voted on the new president, who replaces Dave Cull.
In a statement, Cull congratulated Crosby and acknowledged his support during his years as vice-president.
"I can think of no one more qualified to advocate for the right of ordinary New Zealanders to have a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives."
Crosby is currently a councillor with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, and has served four terms as Tauranga mayor up until 2016.
In a statement, Crosby said he looked forward to using his experience in his new position.
"My aims as president are twofold; to drive sector excellence, and to advocate for legislation and policy that enables every community to stand on their own feet and succeed."
Whanganui mayor Hamish McDouall is taking on the role of vice-president.
