Police tried to stop a vehicle because of concerns about how it was being driven on Great South Road in Huntly at about 12.52am this morning, said Waikato District Commander Superintendent Bruce Bird.

The driver failed to stop and police began chasing the vehicle, Bird said.

At about 1am on Tumate Mahuta Drive, the vehicle clipped a patrol car. It then hit the officer who had been laying spikes.

The officer was taken to hospital with moderate injuries, but has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Police said the person whose vehicle hit the officer was assisting with their enquiries, but charges had not yet been laid.

The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene.
