More than 50 houses in Stokes Valley lost power shortly before 9.30pm on Tuesday.

The cause was not yet known, but power is expected to be restored about midnight, supplier Wellington Electricity said.

The company'ss data showed about 150 homes who were without power since 6pm in Island Bay had their homes lit up again by 9.30pm.

A spokesperson for the company said it was possible the grid could be overloaded, as it's a cold night and people will be trying to heat their homes.

Raukawa Street was affected in Stokes Valley, and in Island Bay the problem was centred in Houghton Bay Road, Jackson Street, Melbourne Road, Volga Road, Bay Lair Grove and Mt Albert Road.
