The single car crash happened just after midnight, between Robinsons Bay and Takamatua Bay.

The driver was the only person in the car.

Road closures have been in place on the Christchurch Akaroa Road overnight, but it's expected to reopen shortly.

Meanwhile another person died after a serious crash near Whakatane on Saturday evening.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash on White Pine Bush Road, part of State Highway 2, at 6.20pm.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating the incident.

Meanwhile roads are closed in Coromandel and Canterbury this morning following crashes.

One person is in a serious condition and a helicopter has been called to the 309 Road in the Coromandel after a car rolled.

The crash happened near Preece Point, south of Coromandel Town, just after 6.30am.

Drivers are asked to divert at State Highways 25 and 29.

And Tunnel Road in Christchurch has re-opened this morning following a crash that left a driver seriously injured.

Police say the incident involved just one vehicle and happened around at around 7.45am, between the Scruttons Road onramp and the Bridle Path Road on-ramp.

Police say there is black ice on the roads across the Canterbury District and residents should avoid any unnecessary travel.
