The burglaries, both overnight, were the result of doors being kicked in, Captain Brenton Millar said.

"It's especially disappointing when we're in the process of helping people at this difficult time. The food that was taken would have helped quite a number of Napier families and individuals," he said.

Security had been beefed up at the food bank, and police were investigating the incidents.

The Salvation Army Napier Corps has assisted around 130 people with food over the last five days and Captain Millar said demand was increasing each day.
