Emergency services have contained a large scrub fire south of Christchurch.

Fire and Emergency said it started shortly before 2pm this afternoon on Leeston Rd in Selwyn.
Flames spread from a car fire, and came close to a church before it was brought under control.
Nine fire crews are still there putting out the flames.
People are being asked to avoid the area or follow road diversions set up by emergency services, until the smoke clears.
