Four helicopters with monsoon buckets are now battling a blaze at a landfill just south of Whangarei in Northland.
Fire and Emergency said 24 firefighters and two helicopters with monsoon buckets were at the Purewa landfill where the fire broke out this afternoon at 2:30.
Two more helicopters were called to the fire this evening.
Residents near the blaze are being advised to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed.
