The name of the man who died after an incident at Waihi Beach early on New Year's Day has been released by police.
He was 56-year-old Derrick Hann of Te Kuiti.
Hann was found in a critical condition af officers were called to reports of disorder in Seaforth Road, Bowentown, just before 1am on Wednesday.
Emergency medical treatment was provided but he died at the scene.
A homicide investigation was launched in the wake of the incident and is ongoing.
