A 70-year-old man has drowned in Whangamata on the Coromandel coast this afternoon.

Emergency services were called just after 3pm to the boat ramp on Beach Road, where the man was pulled from the water.
Police say despite efforts to revive the man, he died at the scene.
The death is expected to be referred to the Coroner.
