A search and rescue operation is under way for a kayaker missing off Great Barrier Island, north of the Coromandel Peninsula.

Authorities were alerted just before 9pm yesterday when the woman had not returned as expected.
A search and rescue operation by the coastguard, police eagle helicopter and Land Search and Rescue teams resumed this morning.
Westpac Rescue Helicopter spotted what may be a kayak on rocks off Great Barrier Island but there was no sign of the person.
