The workforce of the Auckland region will grow by 40% to reach 1 million by 2031, according to projections from Statistics New Zealand.
The agency has analysed past trends and made a series of forecasts. It says the Auckland region's population may reach 2 million in the next 22 years.
That figure includes a 146% increase in people aged 65 and over to more than 329,000.
However, it says the number of children under 15 will only grow by 19% to 354,500.
