A person has been left with critical injuries after a serious crash south of Whakatane.

Just before 3pm emergency services were called to the scene of the two-car crash on Reid Road, Ruatoki, near State Highway 2.
Reid Road is closed and motorists are being asked to avoid the area if possible.
St John said a rescue helicopter had been sent to the scene, and one person had been transported to Whakatane Hospital.
