Police said they believed the assault at Cooladawson Road in the Auckland suburb was unprovoked by a man attacking another man.

CCTV footage showed a grey or silver car believed to be a late model Nissan Dualis, and a white car carrying two women, they said.

Officers were also trying to identify a man described as being of either Māori or Pacific Island decent, with a heavy build, who was wearing a white top with a dark-coloured sling bag across his back

They were also looking for another man who they said was not a suspect, but was walking nearby at the time.
