Four people were taken to hospital on Monday - one with serious injuries - after a jet boat crash near Tekapo.
A woman suffered head injuries and a man has a broken ankle after the accident, which occurred about a kilometre from the head of Lake Tekapo. Two others, a man and a woman, suffered lower back injuries.
Ambulance services were alerted to the accident on the McCauley River, north of Lake Tekapo, at about 10.40am. Two patients were flown by rescue helicopter to Christchurch Hospital and two others were taken by road to Timaru Hospital.
The police in Tekapo say the jetboat accident occurred when the driver entered a river braid, or channel, with too little water in it.
Senior Constable Brent Swanson says the boat was travelling with two others on a private trip when it flipped. He says those involved in the accident were South Island people in their 20s taking part in a private trip, and all were experienced in using jetboats.
