A person has been seriously injured in South Auckland after trying to flee police.

Officers tried to stop a car in Mangere just after 2pm. Police said the driver pulled over, but then drove off at speed as officers approached the car.
It then crashed into a nearby traffic island and a powerbox, which caught fire.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries and the passenger received minor injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit was at the scene, and electricity company Vector was notified.
