Beekeeper fined over toxic honeycomb

A beekeeper who sold toxic honeycomb that poisoned 22 people has been ordered to pay more than $3,300 to the victims.

Kevin Prout, of Projen Apiaries, pleaded guilty to four charges relating to the sale of the honeycomb in Whangamata at Easter last year.

People fell sick after consuming the honey, which contained high levels of the toxin tutin.

Waihi District Court ordered Mr Prout to pay the reparations to some of those poisoned, along with $1,100 in laboratory costs and solicitors' fees.

The Food Safety Authority says the verdict was fair and reasonable and a reminder that food businesses will be prosecuted if they fail to protect their customers.
