Wider ethnic mix sought by Maori wardens

Maori wardens in Manukau are opening their organisation to volunteers from all cultures.

Waatea News reports wardens were in South Auckland malls and shopping centres over the weekend trying to attract recruits.

Maori wardens originally worked within relatively self-contained communities, but district co-ordinator Thomas Henry says Maori now live in diverse communities.

While the association's guidelines say members should be Maori, he says their kaupapa is about caring for your community regardless of race.
