One person has died, and seven others injured after a two-vehicle crash south of Waiouru in the central North Island.
Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1, about 10km from Waiouru, shortly before midday.
Police said one person died in the crash and St John ambulance treated seven others.
A St John spokesperson said one person in a critical condition was taken to Waikato Hospital.
Three others have serious injuries while another three were moderately injured, they said.
The Transport Agency has warned motorists SH1 remains closed south of Waiouru and will likely remain closed for another few hours.
Motorists are being told to expect delays with the detour via SH4 under stop-go control.
Three helicopters were dispatched to the crash: two from Taupō and one from Palmerston North.
