Eight high school students and a teacher from Gisborne were taken to Hawke's Bay hospital after a school bus collided with a car in northern Hawke's Bay.
The Lytton High School mini bus was returning to Gisborne from a school trip when the crash occurred on State Highway Two near Putorino, between Napier and Wairoa. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
All eight students on board and the teacher who was driving were taken to hospital. Police say they had moderate injuries ranging from broken bones to bruising.
The car driver had facial injuries and broken bones.
A rescue helicopter tried to land at the crash scene, but had to turn back because of bad weather. It was raining heavily at the time and visibility was poor.
