A homicide investigation is underway.

The police were called to the park on Brady Road in Ōtāhuhu at about 4.40am.

They man was found critically injured. He later died at the scene.

Rico, who lives near the park, said he was shocked to hear about the death.

"It's a pretty friendly place. Most of the neighbours know each other, it's pretty quiet, nothing really happens. This is actually the first time this has happened in this area."

All activities scheduled for the park today - including football and rugby games - have been cancelled.

Police are seeking witnesses.
