The clean-up from flooding in Palmerston North will cost ratepayers $100,000, according to council official.
Several city streets flooded after heavy rain overwhelmed the stormwater system on Tuesday. The worst hit suburbs were Hokowhitu and Highbury.
Council workers laid down sandbags to divert water into stormwater drains, and ensure water did not enter houses. At one time, flooding was up to 1 metre deep in some streets.
Palmerston North City Council's water and waste services manager Chris Pepper said many parts of the city had been affected by the storm which dumped almost 100mm of rain in five hours.
Mr Pepper was on Wednesday assessing drains in Hokowhitu and Highbury to determine whether pumps are working correctly and check that outlet grills are not blocked.
He said garages and cars were worst affected by the flood water, though many homes avoided damage through laying sandbags. The clean-up was likely to cost $100,000, Mr Pepper said.
Miriam Alexander, who lives in the suburb of Hokowhitu, said on Wednesday the water around her house had subsided but the lawn still resembles a lake.
The council took 1800 calls during and after the rainstorm.
Heavy rain also caused disruption in Wanganui on Tuesday. Police said the worst of the flooding closed part of Hedge Road, near Raupo Street. The road later reopened.
