Power outages in Auckland after wild weather

10:09 pm on 12 May 2019

Heavy rain and gales in Auckland have caused power outages.

The lines company Vector said crews were working in difficult conditions assessing damage from the storm and making repairs.

They were not able to say how many properties are affected but outages are spread throughout the region, from Warkworth to Manurewa.

Vector warned anyone who came across a downed power line to stay at least 10 metres from it, and to call 111.

Strong winds and heavy rain are buffeting Auckland and the Taranaki regions, and will be sweeping down towards Wellington tonight.

Meanwhile, MetService said heavy had hit Mt Taranaki, northern Marlborough, northwest Nelson and Westland.

Forecaster Sarah Garlick said a northerly front had just passed over Auckland, leaving unsettled weather in its wake.

Ms Garlick said southwest gales are expected to follow the northerly front in Auckland tomorrow.
