A forest fire has been contained in southeast Auckland.

The fire broke out at a pine plantation near Kawakawa Bay at about 6.30pm on Thursday, burning about 10 hectares before being controlled.

A helicopter with a monsoon bucket was used as the blaze was not accessible by road.

Principal rural fire officer Brian Cartel says a chainsaw crew was working in the area.
