The offenders entered the Knighton Dairy armed with screwdrivers and poles but fled when the shop owner activated a fog cannon.

Later in the day the group approached the Aberdeen Dairy in Dinsdale, but police were called and the offenders fled in a vehicle.

Police say they gave chase but the pursuit was abandoned quickly due to the way the vehicle was being driven.

It was found a short time later but the occupants had fled on foot.

Four youths and a 17-year old were then found by police.

The youths have been referred to Youth Aid and the 17-year-old has been charged with assault with intent to rob and unlawfully getting into a vehicle.

Police are still making inquiries to locate a sixth person, seen wearing a dark green long sleeve top.
