Police said he was Logan Recce Tuson from Hamilton.

The 7-year-old was spending the day at the beach with family, when police said they were alerted just after 3.30pm that a child was missing.

The boy had got into difficulty in the water and was swept into the harbour channel.

He was found at about 5pm after a search by Coast Guard, Surf Life Saving, a rescue helicopter, and the public.

Emergency services tried to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful.

Police advised swimmers to take note of the Water Safety messages from Surf Life Saving and Coast Guard.

Water Safety New Zealand said there were 68 preventable drowning deaths in 2018, down from 92 in 2017.

However, the number of drownings at beaches was up slightly, from 16 to 18.
