Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 1, near Clarence, in North Canterbury.
Two motorists have been airlifted from the area. One, with critical injuries, has been taken to Wellington Hospital and the other, with serious injuries, to Christchurch Hospital.
The road was closed and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
Contractors were working to clear the road, but in the meantime Lewis Pass was to be used as a detour.
