A person suffered serious burns in an explosion near Christchurch this morning.
Fire and Emergency spokesman Mau Barbara said it occurred in a paddock in Yaldhurst, where a controlled burn-off was taking place.
"We've received a call from ambulance at approximately 10.05am to an explosion and a person with burns in the Yaldhurst area," he said.
"We responded and the person with burns has been transported to hospital with burns to the body and possibly their airways."
Mr Barbara said fire investigators were at the scene trying to establish what caused the explosion.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.
