A crane hit power lines and caused a large fire to break out in New Plymouth this evening.

A Fire Service spokesperson said emergency services were called to Molten Metals on Centennial Drive shortly before 5pm.
She said a crane hit powerlines and ignited shrubs or grass on the property.

The Fire Service is asking people in the area to stay indoors and close the windows because of the risk of smoke inhalation.
The spokeswoman said 12 firefighting appliances were currently at the scene.
