Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston said the man was attacked on Friday after he picked up two male hitchhikers at about 1.30pm.

The pair pushed him out of his Suzuki car near Kerikeri Airport and drove off in it - heading in the direction of Okaihau.

Mr Johnston said it was a cowardly and unprovoked attack on a vulnerable member of the community.

Police were keen to hear from anyone who had seen the red Suzuki Swift, which had the number plate GNS33.
