The man went to the Erawan Thai Restaurant, on the intersection of Shirley and Hills Roads, about 6.45pm, police said.

Detective Sergeant Craig Johnson said the man demanded money from staff members and took a significant amount of cash from the till.

Staff and guests ran from the restaurant out a side door. They were uninjured and receiving support, he said.

The offender was last seen running down Shirley Road towards New Brighton.
