In an unusual public service, Dunedin police are advising against drinking beer stolen from the loading dock of Speight's Brewery in Rattray Street last week.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson said the thief jumped the fence to the brewery sometime between 24 and 27 August, and taken three 24-packs - two of Waikato Draught and another unnamed beer - which were "only in the testing stages".

"The consumption of it might be detrimental to their health," he said.

"That beer shouldn't be drunk by anyone."

Anyone with information about the theft should contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800.
