Education support workers land historic pay equity settlement

3:03 pm on 14 August 2018

The government has announced an historic pay equity settlement for hundreds of women working in early childhood and primary schools.

The 329 women support workers will get a pay rise of up to 30 percent.

The primary school and early childhood union, New Zealand Educational Institute, and the Ministry of Education today signed the Terms of Settlement.

The women were currently paid between $16.77 and $19.87 an hour.

Their minimum hourly rate will move to $21.67 with a new top step of $24.73 for those who have done four to nine years' service, and a new rate of $25.70 an hour for ten or more years' service as of 1 July.

The support workers' fight for pay equity began during the last Labour government.
