The budget for a new destination playground in Queenstown has blown out by more than $300,000.

The original budget for the Queenstown Gardens Commemorative play space was $670,000, but the revised cost is closer to $1 million.

Queenstown Lakes District Council community services manager Thunes Cloete said the cost increase reflected the higher construction costs due to meeting design and safety standards.

The park would meet the needs of families now and into the future, Dr Cloete said.

"The project will involve removal of the existing equipment, supply and installation of new play equipment, safety surfacing from recycled materials rather than the unpopular pea gravel, increased seating, and accessible walkways throughout," Dr Cloete said.

The playground received a $100,000 grant from the Central Lakes Trust.

Work has begun on the Bathhouse Playground located at the CBD entrance to the Queenstown Gardens, which is expected to be finished by October.
