The cordoned-off property is a white weatherboard 1950s-style house.

Stokes Valley resident Roxanne Caldow told RNZ she was on her way to pick up her daughter from school when she heard a gunshot.

"I was walking down George Street and I heard a gunshot - a bang that sounded like a gunshot. And then I saw a young boy and a young-ish mum and he was calling for his mum to come out of the house after the gunshot that went out."

Ms Caldow said she was unable to return home while the police continued to search for the shooter.

Hutt Valley police inspector Scott Cooper said police were checking at Lower Hutt addresses to located the gunman.

He said police did not believe the shooter was a risk to the wider public.
