Bread manufacturers reassure consumers

Bread manufacturers say a ban on Russian grain exports will not have a major impact on New Zealand prices.

Russia is to cease exports from 15 August to 31 December after crops were devastated by droughts and fires.

International wheat prices are at their highest in 23 months, raising concerns that the New Zealand consumer would also be hit.

Quality Bakers says it will not be affected by the ban as the cimpany's grain needs are already covered until early next year.

Tip Top says there is no worldwide shortage of grain at present and any impact on consumers will be minor.

Federated Farmers says there is no sign of any rise in domestic wheat returns.

Grain and seed chairman Ian Morten says the rises overseas have had had no impact on the prices that milling companies are offering growers here.

The federation is still waiting to hear whether the Commerce Commission will investigate its complaint about mills paying domestic growers lower prices than they are paying for imported wheat.
