A Defence Force disposal team carried out some controlled detonations after a suspicious package was found in the loading dock at Te Papa about 6pm.

The package was subsequently found to be harmless.

The museum had been due to host the Wellington Girls College school ball last night, but a cordon was in place outside when students arrived.

It's understood the event is being rescheduled.

Te Papa's spokesperson Kate Camp said the safety of the public came first, and museum officials were thankful for the understanding shown by students.
