A St John spokesperson said they received reports of an incident at about 3.30pm this afternoon and took the 2-year-old boy to Middlemore hospital.

The hospital has confirmed the boy was now in a stable condition.

An Avsec security spokesperson said staff were "extremely surprised" to discover a child in the baggage handling system this afternoon.

"How the child got on the conveyor belt is being investigated by the airport company."

The spokesperson said Avsec staff moved quickly to comfort the child and administer first aid until medical staff arrived.

Auckland Airport has advised WorkSafe NZ about the incident, and has launched its own investigation to find out how it happened.
