Wellington beat Zurich, Copenhagen, Edinburgh and Vienna for best quality of life, to top the list for the second year running.

The report looks at purchasing power, safety, healthcare, cost of living, property-to-income ratios, traffic commutes, pollution and climate.

Wellington was ranked as the least polluted of the cities and was ranked fourth best for property-to-income, commuting, and fifth for its climate.

The capital also scored well for the price of a monthly transport pass, in the "cheap date index", and the "cappuccino index" shows it is average in terms of the price of a coffee.

Wellington mayor Justin Lester said the city was in good company with the other cities on that list and it was a "seriously sweet feeling".

"Wellingtonians like to say you can't beat the city on a good day, but looks like we've had two good years and we couldn't be prouder.

"We've got the best coffee, the best beer, the best wind. What's not to love?"
