Restrictions on younger drivers' car power urged

3:10 pm on 30 July 2010

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) is urging the Government to curb access to high-powered and modified vehicles by drivers under the age of 25.

The call follows the death of a child in Christchurch when a modified car skidded onto a footpath. Police say modifications to the teenage driver's car may have enabled it to slide more easily.

The Government says it is investigating whether to reform the law in this area but the MTA wants it changed immediately.

It says the government should follow Australian states, which have introduced vehicle power restrictions for drivers under 25 on restricted licences.
