Police said the two victims were walking down the street near the Mecca Maxima store at about 2.30am on Saturday when the group started attacking them.

Detective Constable Tom Malcolm said one of the victims commented that he liked the music the group was playing, but that was the only interaction they had.

He said CCTV footage of the assault was too graphic to release.

Both victims are still in Auckland Hospital, recovering from their injuries.

Mr Malcolm said the police were concerned about the random nature of the attack and have appealed for witnesses.

"We know our community will be absolutely shocked by this crime - two innocent members of our community simply having a night out when they were attacked.

"Given the random nature of this attack we believe this could have happened to anyone so it is important we identify these offenders and hold them to account as soon as possible.

"We are asking for any members of our community who recognise the men in these pictures to contact us immediately."

Mr Malcolm also thanked bystanders who stepped in to help the victims.

"They put themselves in danger to prevent any further injury to these men and we commend their actions."
