About 70 people have marched on the New Plymouth District Council this afternoon to protest against a proposal to sell half of a public golf course for a housing development.

Opponents say the Fitzroy course is protected recreational space and should be retained.

The council wants to use half the money raised in a sell-off to fund flagship projects and use the rest to establish a council owned property development company.

One of the protest organisers, Craig Williamson, said the reserve land was not the council's to sell, and he hoped the proposal would be axed from the draft long term plan.

The council is voting to approve its consultation document this evening.
