Double-dipping saga will never happen again - Defence

Defence says a double-dipping saga allowances that led to about $US90,000 being repaid to the United Nations will never happen again.

Four Defence Force officers who were seconded to the UN in New York claimed housing allowances in both countries between 2001 and 2008.

Afterwards, the Auditor-General's Office was asked to investigate. A highly critical report was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday about the cost control culture at Defence Force headquarters.

Officers were led to think it was okay to lie about housing allowances.

The head of the Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Jerry Mateparae, says he has been working since 2008 to ensure such a situation cannot happen again.
