State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura has been closed this afternoon by a slip, with motorists being told to take the alternative inland route to the town.

The Transport Agency said the slip is between Ferniehurst and Peketa, and the next update on when the road will re-open won't be until tomorrow morning.
It said people can use the Inland Road through Waiau to get to Kaikōura.
State Highway 1 north of Kaikōura is still open.
