Counties Manukau senior sergeant John Yearbury said police were attending an incident in Pukekohe where a man had received a gunshot wound to his leg about 12.40pm.

They shut down Paerata School as a precaution while trying to find the shooter, who ran from the house in nearby Hogan Street.

At this stage, police believed the offender was known to the victim.

CGM Diesel office manager Sue Searle said they were also put on lockdown.

"The boys were just packing up ready to go for lunch and we got a phone call to say that it was the police and can we keep all staff inside.

"Next thing we see there's a policeman out in the yard with a rifle, and an Eagle [helicopter] flying over."

Paerata School is no longer in lockdown.
