A man shot by police in West Auckland has been moved to a plastic surgery ward in Middlemore hospital.
He was shot several times by officers at about 6pm on Sunday after he pointed a gun at them during a confrontation at his home in New Lynn.
He is in a satisfactory condition and is still under police guard.
Senior officers from outside the Waitakere policing district have been called in to investigate the shooting, along with the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
Superintendant Bill Searle says the investigators will also look into why an attempt to taser the man was unsuccessful.
