Police have received two complaints about the man approaching preteens asking for directions, before fleeing when confronted by adults.

Senior Sergeant Mark Donaldson said both complaints had originated in the Southern policing district - which covers Otago and Southland.

Police were aware of the man's identity and the German national was driving a rented Toyota Hiace.

However, officers were yet to speak to him and any similar encounters should be reported immediately.

"He approached a six-year-old girl asking for directions and when approached by an adult he took off - that appears to be his MO," Mr Donaldson said.

"We have got concerns about him obviously."

Anyone who believes they have encountered the man should contact police.
